Recently, Kyushu cloud rocket's "Lingyun" 10 ton liquid oxygen methane rocket engine has completed multiple starts and deep variable thrust two in one test run. This test was conducted in the 100 ton double station test base independently built by Kyushu cloud rocket, and the test was a complete success.

The test has the following characteristics:

① It marks the first time that China has mastered the technology of more than three times starting of liquid oxygen methane rocket engine, and has become the first country in the world to realize three times starting of liquid oxygen methane rocket engine;

② Before the engine was shut down, the engine was throttled to 40% at one time, and the "Lingyun" engine fully verified the variable thrust performance of the engine after multiple starts, meeting the variable thrust requirements of the engine before the rocket recovery landing;

③ This test covers the flight test mission profile requirements of the target rocket.

What is multiple start of liquid rocket engine?

Multiple Start refers to the ability of liquid rocket engine to achieve more than three ignition starts in one flight mission. Due to the limitation of starting mode, the traditional liquid rocket engine can achieve 1-2 times of starting, while the new generation of commercial launch vehicles put forward higher requirements for the starting ability of the engine, which requires more than 3 times of starting, which brings challenges to the timing setting of the engine. By innovating the starting mode, the engine starting ability can be effectively improved to meet the recycling demand.

Why do I have to start many times?

Liquid rocket can be reused by vertical recovery, which can significantly reduce the cost of single launch, and has a broad application prospect. At present, the key bottleneck restricting the development of vertical recovery rocket in China is liquid rocket engine. The vertical recovery rocket needs to go through at least three ignition starting processes: ground ignition take-off, thrusting deceleration in the windy area and thrusting deceleration in the landing section to make the rocket recover and land according to the given trajectory. Therefore, more than three times starting ability of engine is necessary for vertical recovery launch vehicle.

"Lingyun" engine is the first liquid oxygen methane engine in China to truly realize reusable, multiple start and deep variable thrust technology. It has passed the deep variable thrust hot test examination in 2019. During the development process of "Lingyun" engine, it has low-cost and rapid use and maintenance, multiple start capability, large-scale variable thrust regulation technology, control technology and other technologies A series of bold and difficult explorations and attempts have been made in the adaptability technology of key components. The success of this hot test indicates that "Lingyun" engine has made further efforts in product and core technology, and is about to enter the industrialization stage after completing the accumulation of reliability.

Huang Shiqi, technical director of Kyushu Yunjian engine, said:

The "Lingyun" engine multiple start + deep variable thrust two in one test verified that the "Lingyun" engine multiple start timing setting is accurate, the main and auxiliary dual torch electric ignition system works reliably, the thrust regulation system works stably, and the response characteristics are excellent; the core components of the engine have good adaptability to multiple start and large range variable thrust. It has laid a solid foundation for the engine to participate in the customer's first flight.

At present, the "Lingyun" engine has completed thousands of seconds of test run assessment, and the technologies of multiple start-up, deep thrust adjustment, low-cost use and maintenance have been verified. In the future, the "Lingyun" engine will continue to carry out engine reliability accumulation work, large-scale continuous variable thrust test, working condition deviation test and other work, so as to make a solid foundation for engine technology innovation and reliability. In addition, "Lingyun" engine innovation achievements can be transplanted to the high thrust "Longyun" engine, and participate in the subsequent test assessment.
